Troubleshooting Common iPhone Problems

Have you ever had one of those moments where your iPhone just stops working, and you don’t know why? It’s infuriating, isn’t it? As some iPhone handsets have a failure rate of 26 percent, it’s important to know when they can and can’t be fixed.

iPhone problems can be annoying, but much of the time, they can be solved.

If you know how the iPhone works and how to troubleshoot it, you can take the sting out of those frustrating moments.

Audio Problems

Audio problems are one of the most common iPhone problems. Luckily, it’s also an iPhone problem that’s easy to fix. If the audio is distorted or quiet, the first step is to try resetting the SIM card.

If you’re still having problems, it could be a problem with the iPhone’s hardware. Check and see if the audio problem happens when connected to a Bluetooth speaker.

Also, check if the speakers and mic are clear. Many iPhone issues have been solved by taking a bit of pocket lint off the mic.

If none of these solutions help, restart your iPhone. If the problem persists, try factory resetting your device. Make sure your data has been backed up first.

Dropping Calls

Dropped calls are a common problem with the iPhone X, and iOS 13.1.2 has been causing the problem on newer models.

If you’re constantly cut off during a call and have had enough, help is at hand. Follow these steps:

  1. Try restarting the iPhone.
  2. Go into Settings, then “General,” then reset network settings.
  3. If you still have issues, try turning off VoLTE in cellular data options. This has been known to cause issues in the past.

White Screen of Death

If your screen ever turns completely white, showing no information or icons, then commiserations: you’ve met the white screen of death. This often happens if an update has failed or if storage has become corrupted through other means.

One of the more common iPhone issues, there are a few different possible solutions to try:

  • Try charging your phone. This issue has been caused by low batteries before.
  • Factory reset your phone, by connecting to iTunes.

If you still have the issue, boot into Device Firmware Upgrade mode. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Turn the iPhone off.
  2. Load iTunes on your computer, and connect the phone via USB.
  3. Hold down the power button and home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button. Keep a hold of the home button until a message appears in iTunes. This will let you activate recovery mode.


Overheating is a common problem with iPhones, but especially the iPhone 6S. When it’s overheating, there’s often an iPhone error message warning you that the phone needs to cool. During this, you can’t use it for anything except emergency calls.

If your iPhone is overheating, there are a few different tips you can try:

  • If you keep the phone in a case, take it out.
  • Put it into Airplane Mode. This uses fewer resources and helps your phone cool quicker.
  • Avoid playing games or using other intensive applications.
  • Keep the phone out of direct sunlight during hot weather.

Screen Not Working

When your screen stops working it can make you long for the days of having physical buttons. If your screen is acting up, try cleaning it. Sometimes a little dust, dirt, or moisture on the screen can stop it from working.

If this doesn’t solve the issue, try restarting the phone.

If it still isn’t responding, check for any damage. Cracks are obvious, but water damage can stop the screen from working too. Water damage often appears as a small orange-yellow spot on the screen.

If there’s any physical damage, you can order a new screen or get in touch with Apple.

Battery Life Drains Too Quickly

If your iPhone’s battery life is draining too quickly, your battery could need replacing. However, this common iPhone problem can also just be a response to too many system resources being used.

If your battery is draining too fast, and you’ve updated your iPhone’s firmware, the problem could be your apps. Go into Settings, then “Battery” and then “Battery Usage.” On this screen, you can check which apps are using up your battery life, and when.

If one app is eating up too much battery, try updating it. If this doesn’t solve the problem, or there isn’t an update, uninstall it.

If this issue continues, contact Apple.

iPhone Won’t Connect to Wifi

If you’re on metered data, this is one problem with iPhones you’ll want to avoid. Try these solutions to correct the problem:

  • Does your router support Apple products? If it does, is it functioning normally, and are other devices connecting?
  • Restart your iPhone.
  • If the problem persists, reset your network settings as we detailed earlier.

iPhone Will Not Charge From Wireless Charger

Some iPhone handsets have issues with Qi wireless chargers. If the phone is recognizing the Qi as a charger, but not charging, there’s only one solution that’s worked: restart your iPhone with a soft reset.

Press the volume up button, then press the volume down button. Then hold down the power button. The Apple logo will appear.

If this still hasn’t solved your problem, you will have to charge the iPhone with a cable, until an update fixes the issue.
